Book Discussion Clubs

Let's talk about books

Book Discussion Clubs have operated in public libraries in Gdansk and in the area of the Pomorskie Voivodeship since April 2007. The number of clubs is increasing from year to year. After 4 years of their activity the Club fans meet in 54 clubs, 17 of which are located in the subsidiaries of the Voivodeship and Municipal Public Library in Gdansk (subsidiaries No. 1, 6, 9, 16, 18, 25, 28, 44, 50, 62, 63, Gdansk Subsidiary and the Comic Studio). The Clubs for adults prevail, but in subsidiaries No. 1, 6, 9, 16, 25 and 50 the clubs for children operate as well. The sensations for the scale of Poland are the Clubs operating at the Remand Centres. There are three such clubs operating in the Pomorskie Voivodeship including – one in the Remand Centre in Gdansk. It is worth mentioning the Kashubian club operating in Stężyca as well as the club working with mentally disabled children in Pelplin.

DKK operate with the national multi-year programme of the Institute of Books called "Here we read", which promotes reading.

The Book Discussion Clubs are the reading groups attracting people at various ages who like reading and who meet in order to talk about books. The Book Clubs in the United Kingdom have operated since 1926, and in Poland the first groups were established 5 years ago, thanks to the cooperation of the Institute of Books and the British Council.

Our meetings do not have strictly defined forms; they are open for everyone and everyone is welcome here. They may be carried out by the moderator or members of the club. The moderator does not need to be familiar with the literature, and the members do not have to lead serious discussions. They may just have fun, because the meetings are great opportunity to have fun and meet new people, the way to spend free time, and to learn about new authors and books. The Club Members have the opportunity to talk to their favourite authors in numerous public meetings with authors, lectures and workshops organised within the DKK.
